Gongsanseong Fortress

Gongsanseong Fortress(公山城), the Historic Site No. 12, consists of a mud castle of 400m long and a stone castle of 2260m stretching from Geumseong-dong, Sanseong-dong to Yokryong-dong, Gongju. The circumference and dimension of this fortress are 2, 660m long and 210,000㎡ wide. It is located on basin-type hill of 110m MSL with the road linked to the downtown to the south and Geumgang river to the north. It looks like a closed curve, which is 800m from east to west and about 400m from north to south.

It was originally a mud castle, but most parts of it was renovated to a stone castle as it is from the reign of King Seonjo and King Injo in Joseon Dynasty. Gongsanseong Fortress was a capital in Baekje period, but it played certain roles by period in the changes of history as well as in Baekje period. Therefore, relics in each period remained in many places. The castle was called Unjinseong when it was build during Baekje period, and then, its name was changed to Gongjusanseong Fortress in Joseon Dynasty period, Gongsanseong Fortress and Ssangsusanseong Fortress, then, Sanseong Park when the park system was established. The stone wall and mud wall for reinforcement are about 1,925m and 753m. Total wall for reinforcement is 2,660m including a mud wall of 467m long out of the eastern rampart. Total length of wall is 2,193m except the external castle.
