The baekje Cultural Festival is one of the three greatest cultural festivals held in Korea. It is held each year in October(9~12), either in Gongju or Buyeo, in the spirit of upholding the fabulous culture and beautiful tradition of the Baekje period. The Festival consists of nearly 100 events, including the opening ceremony, parade, relief rite of Wungjinseong gatekeeper, memorial ceremony for the 4 great kings of backje, mask parade, folk games, and cultural arts events. In Ovtober, the whole city becomes immersed in a festive mood
Ay this festival, Woongsin(bear goddess), the central character of the tragic legend of bear and human, is remembered. The festival is held between July and August, and is consisted of Koran traditional music, play, orachestra, Samulnori(4 instrument musical performance), and simineowool-madang(gather-around with the citizens)
Starting with an opening ceremony which consists of king's procession on early April, the changing of guard performance by 30 soldiers is held 2 times a week and is continueduntil the end of October except for the rainy season of July and August.
This festival presents an art movement attempting arts in harmony with nature. Every year between August and September, for 50 days, installation art exhibitions, academic seminars, and performance arts are introduced at the Gongju Fortress Park.
Each year, around March 15 by lunar calendar, services are held at sinwonsa temple and Jungakdan(a special place on the mountain) by the people of Gongju(descendents of Baekje living in the vicinity of Mt. Gyeryong). The religious services encompass Vonfucianism, Buddhism and other traditional beliefs and are offered as paryers for peace and a rich harvest.
This festival is held in November each year in commemoration of the holy sacrifice of those who fought in the Donghak Revolution.
The Park Chan Ho Cup Children's Baseball Tournament was named after Park Chan Ho, a native of Gonju, who is currently playing in US Major-leaguebaseball. For the purpose of instilling the love of sports and baseball, the tournament draws participants from all over the nation. The tournament took of in 1999 followed by a second tournament in 2001. 30 teams each year participates in the games which are held nearby the Geumgang river.
