    Single-Parent Family Support Act

  • Eligibility Criteria

    Single-parent families with dependents under the age of 18 (or under the age of 22 if in school) who meet the selection criteria announced in 2019

  • Selection Criteria

    A “single parent (or single-parent family)” defined by the Single-Parent Family Support Act is as follows:

    • A widow or widower or a person divorced from (excl. those who are in the middle of divorce proceedings), or abandoned by his/her spouse;
    • A person whose spouse has lost his or her ability to work for more than 6 months due to a mental or physical disability;
    • An unmarried single mother or father (excl. those with a common-law partner);

      Common-law marriage, which is not legally recognized in Korea, refers to a relationship of a cohabiting couple who have not formally registered their relation

    • A person whose spouse’s whereabouts (whether he/she is alive or dead) are unknown;
    • A person who ran away from home due to domestic violence or conflict with his/her spouse or in-laws;
    • A woman who cannot be supported by her husband as he is fulfilling his compulsory military duties;
    • A person who cannot be supported by his/her spouse as he/she is in prison;
    • A person of foreign nationality who is currently living in Korea and caring for a child of Korean nationality whom he/she had with a Korean spouse and who meets any of the above criteria;
    • A child who is not being supported by his/her parents and a grandparent caring for the child;
    • A young single-parent family
      • A family that meets the above criteria (single mother or single father) whose head of the household is 24 years of age or under
